DESCRIPTION:Prof. Pascal Fua\, Computer Vision Laboratory\, EPFL\nAbstract
:\nAerodynamic shape optimization has many industrial applications. Existi
ng methods\, however\, are so computationally demanding that typical engin
eering practices are to either simply try a limited number of hand-designe
d shapes or restrict oneself to shapes that can be parameterized using onl
y few degrees of freedom. In this work\, we introduce a new way to optimiz
e complex shapes fast and accurately.\n\nTo this end\, we train Geodesic C
onvolutional Neural Networks to emulate a fluidynamics simulator. The key
to making this approach practical is remeshing the original shape using a
poly-cube map\, which makes it possible to perform the computations on GPU
s instead of CPUs. The neural net is then used to formulate an objective f
unction that is differentiable with respect to the shape parameters\, whic
h can then be optimized using a gradient-based technique. This outperforms
state-of-the-art methods by 5 to 20% for standard problems and\, even mor
e importantly\, our approach applies to cases that previous methods cannot
handle.\n\nBio: \nPascal Fua received an engineering degree from Ecole Po
lytechnique\, Paris\, in 1984 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Uni
versity of Orsay in 1989. He joined EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Techn
ology) in 1996 where he is a Professor in the School of Computer and Commu
nication Science and head of the Computer Vision Lab. Before that\, he wor
ked at SRI International and at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis as a Computer Scien
tist. His research interests include shape modeling and motion recovery fr
om images\, analysis of microscopy images\, and Augmented Reality. He has
(co)authored over 300 publications in refereed journals and conferences. H
e has received several ERC grants. He is an IEEE Fellow and has been an As
sociate Editor of IEEE journal Transactions for Pattern Analysis and Machi
ne Intelligence. He often serves as program committee member\, area chair\
, and program chair of major vision conferences and has cofounded three sp
 inoff companies.
