 terloo\nAbstract:\nA brief overview of ongoing and recent research project
 s in the Fluid Mechanics Research Laboratory will be presented first. Thes
 e projects include experimental investigations of airfoil performance in l
 ow Reynolds number flows\, flows over complex cylindrical geometries commo
 n to mechanical systems and civil structures\, energy harvesting from vort
 ical structures\, flow induced vibrations\, and flow control.\nThe main pr
 esentation will focus on separating-reattaching flows on airfoils and thei
 r response to forcing. Recent advancements in small and medium scale wind 
 turbines as well as unmanned aerial vehicles brought about an increased in
 terest in airfoil operation at low chord Reynolds numbers (below about 500
 \,000). Airfoil performance in this domain of Reynolds numbers differs sig
 nificantly from that common to high Reynolds number flows. In particular\,
  a laminar boundary layer on the suction side of the airfoil often separat
 es even at low angles of attack\, which detrimentally affects airfoil perf
 ormance. The severity of airfoil performance degradation depends significa
 ntly on separated shear layer development. The shear layer is inherently u
 nstable and undergoes transition to turbulence downstream of separation\, 
 which can lead to flow reattachment and the formation of a separation bubb
 le. Recent results from a series of experimental studies will be presented
  to provide a new outlook on the attendant bubble dynamics and the respons
 e of such flows to controlled excitation.\n\nBio:\nDr. Serhiy Yarusevych r
 eceived his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto i
 n 2006. Since 2006\, he has been directing the Fluid Mechanics Research La
 boratory in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at t
 he University ofWaterloo\, Canada. His research is focused on fluid mechan
 ics and its multidisciplinary applications in engineering\, including oper
 ation of airfoils at low Reynolds numbers\, flows over bluff bodies\, free
  shear flows\, flow induced vibrations and noise\, laminar-to-turbulent tr
 ansition\, and flow control.
