CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:Aim: The Bill  & Melinda  Gates  Foundation  recognizes
that  solving the  most  pressing challenges  in global  health  and
development  requires  more  of  the world’s  brightest  minds
working  on them. The Grand Challenges family of initiatives seeks to eng
age innovators from around the world to solve these    challenges.  Th
e current Grant Challenge request for proposals aims at improving access t
o and use of safe and appropriate cesarean section.  \n\nCesarean section
(CS) is a life-saving procedure for mother and newborn. However\, too oft
en c-section is not available\, is provided without adequate quality\, or
is provided when not medically indicated - all dimensions that lead to mat
ernal and newborn mortality and morbidity. An opportunity exists to nurtur
e the field to identify and demonstrate feasibility of interventions to ad
dress challenges related to safe\, timely\, and appropriate cesarean secti
on in low and middle income countries.\n\nThe foundation invites proposals
for interventions to address the following challenges related to the cesa
rean section:\n \n\n	Increasing access to cesarean section where it is cu
rrently inadequate\n	Increasing quality and safety of cesarean section to
reduce iatrogenic harm to both mothers and newborns\n	Reducing rates of no
n-medically indicated cesarean section.\n\n\nInterventions addressing more
than one challenge (e.g. quality and access) are encouraged. The foundati
on is particularly interested in geographies with high fertility and weak
health systems that will face challenges to ensure the provision of safe c
-sections can keep pace with medical need\, and will thus consider applica
tions proposing activities to be implemented in Sub-Saharan Africa or Sout
 h Asia (India\, Pakistan\, Bangladesh).\n\nFunding:        Seed gran
 ts:               $100’000\n
         Validation grants:    $1’000’000\n\nDuration:
24 months\n\nEligibility:  Grand Challenges is open to both foreign an
 d domestic organizations\, including non-profit organizations\, for-profit
   companies\,  international  organizations\,  government  agencies
and  academic  institutions. Upon  registration\,  applicants  must
provide  information  about  the  tax  status  of  their  organ
ization  as  different  terms  and  conditions  may  apply\; please
direct any questions to the Research Office.  Proposals should focus on
health service or delivery innovation. This call for applications excludes
development of new medical devices and non-interventional analysis of dat
 a. They must include participation from institutions based in South Asia a
nd sub-Saharan Africa and propose activities to be implemented in a countr
y in these areas.\n\nHow to Apply: Application packages should consist of
