DESCRIPTION:Aim: The Bill  & Melinda  Gates  Foundation  recognizes
that  solving the  most  pressing challenges  in global  health  and
development  requires  more  of  the world’s  brightest  minds
working  on them. The Grand Challenges family of initiatives seeks to eng
age innovators from around the world to solve these    challenges.  Th
e current Grant Challenge request for proposals aims at accelerating disco
very for non-hormonal contraceptives. \n\nThe Bill & Melinda Gates Founda
tion is committed to a long-term vision of expanding contraceptive options
for the most vulnerable women in low-resource settings through developmen
t of new methods that better align with women’s preferences. Contracepti
ve product innovation will be required to achieve this goal. Specifically\
, the emphasis for this work is on developing safe and effective non-hormo
nal contraceptive agents with both improved overall tolerability and a sid
e effect profile differentiated from hormonal methods. This emphasis is ba
sed on an understanding that overall tolerability of and side effects from
hormonal methods present real and meaningful barriers to women realizing
their reproductive intentions.\n\nThe ultimate outcome driving the foundat
ion’s investment in this area is the discovery new drug candidates that
 i) provide safe and effective contraception\, ii) do not rely on systemic
administration of reproductive steroid hormones or act through perturbatio
n of sex steroid pathways\, and iii) are suitable and appropriate for depl
oyment in a low resource setting. The focus of this Grand Challenge is on
broadly enhancing the research ecosystem for contraceptive discovery and a
dvancing novel and bold ideas that can accelerate drug discovery in this f
 ield.\n\nFunding:        max. $2’000’000\n\nDuration:      3
6 months\n\nEligibility:  Grand Challenges is open to both foreign and do
