DESCRIPTION:Following the serious SARS and MERS epidemics of the past\, an
other coronavirus has led to the Covid-19 epidemic\, a public health emerg
ency of global proportions. An intensification of research efforts is ther
efore urgently needed. For this reason\, the SNSF is supporting projects i
nvolving research into coronaviruses - to tackle the current crisis and pr
epare for likely future epidemics. The SNSF is convinced that Swiss resear
ch can make a difference and has therefore launched a special call. A budg
et of five million Swiss francs has provisionally been earkmarked for the
 call.\n\nThe call covers the following priority areas:\n\n	Virological\, i
mmunological\, and immunopathological aspects of SARS-CoV-2 infection that
may be relevant for understanding pathogenesis\, for the development of v
accines and ad-vancement into clinical testing of therapeutics (including
repurposing) and diagnostic tools\;\n	Animal and environmental research on
the origin and evolution of SARS-CoV-2\, and research on control measures
at the human-animal interface\;\n	The natural history\, clinical characte
risation and management of COVID-19 disease\;\n	Epidemiological studies\,
for example studies on key parameters determining transmission\, risks of
severe adverse outcomes\, forecasting spread of the outbreak and estimatin
g the effect of public health measures (clinical and economical benefits)\
;\n	Infection prevention and control\, including best practice to protect
health care workers\; and prevent (or if not prevented\, at least rapidly
recognise and halt) hospital-acquired infections\;\n	The societal impact a
t large\, including developing strategies to understand and combat misinfo
rmation\, stigma\, and fear\;\n	Impact of official and social media commun
ications on understanding and behaviour of policy makers\, health care wor
kers\, patients and populations\;\n	The social and political history\, inc
luding for instance public communication\, legal aspects\, border controls
\, mobility restrictions by States of COVID-19 disease\;\n	International r
elations\, global coordination\, response systems and crisis management\,
 in-cluding measuring/mitigating economical and political effects\;\n	Ethic
al considerations for research\, including the design of clinical\, epidem
 iological\, anthro-pological\, and public health studies.\n\n\nOn completi
on of the project\, research data must be made available for researchers\,
authorities and the general public worldwide and without delay.\n\nWho ca
n apply: (all must apply)\n\n\n	1 or more researchers from all disciplines
who are able to contribute to a better understanding of the virus\, its s
pread\, the resulting illness as well as diagnosis and treatment\, or who
can help the health system and society as a whole deal more effectively wi
th the epidemic.\n	Applicants must have an independent research position t
hat enables them to independently conduct a research project\, make a subs
tantial personal contribution to the project and lead staff members (same
eligibility criteria as for SNSF Project Funding – see EPFL Instructions
for SNSF Project Funding).\n	One applicant may be based outside Switzerla
