DESCRIPTION:Prof. Simone Deparis\nModeling and simulations of vascular flo
ws: reduced order modeling and physics based neural networks.\n\nAbstract:
\nWe are interested in the approximation of vascular flows modeled by para
metrized partial differential equations\, when the value of the physical p
arameters is unknown or difficult to be directly measured. We aim at estim
ating the flows field or other quantities of clinical interest by combinin
g reduced order modeling with neural networks. The reduced order model acc
ounts for the underlying physical phenomenon and allows for generating a l
arge test set for the training of the neural network. The snapshots are ob
tained from randomly selected values of the physical parameters during an
expensive offline phase. The chosen DNN architecture resembles an asymmetr
ic autoencoder in which the decoder is the reduced orde model solver and i
t does not contain trainable parameters.\nWe present few examples of our m
ethod in applications related to vascular flows and electrophysiology\, wh
ere the neural network is able to approximately identify the physical para
meters or clinical indices.\n\nBio:\nSimone Deparis is Adjunct Professor i
n Mathematics and deputy director of the Section of Mathematics. His resea
rch  focuses on scientific computing and numerical analysis applied to ha
emodynamics\, but he also studies reduced order models for the Navier-Stok
es equations and blood flow. Recently he has begun to investigate the inte
rplay between reduced basis and neural network approaches for parametrised
PDEs.  The Center for Intelligent Systems at EPFL (CIS) is a collabora
tion among IC\, SB\, and STI that brings together researchers working on d
ifferent aspects of Intelligent Systems.\n---\nThe Center for Intelligent
Systems at EPFL (CIS) is a collaboration between IC\, SB\, STI and ENAC th
at brings together researchers working on different aspects of intelligent
systems.\nIn order to promote exchanges among researchers and encourage t
he creation of new\, collaborative projects\, CIS is organizing a "Get to
know your neighbors" series. Each seminar will consist of 1-2 short overvi
ew presentations geared to the general public at EPFL.\n \nOur second sem
inar will take place live on Zoom: https://epfl.zoom.us/j/95904377229\n \
 nMonday\, 5th October 2020 from 3:15 to 4:15 pm\n\n\nNB: Video recordings
of the seminars will be made available on our website and published on our
  social media pages
