\, Germany\nMeteorologists daily send sounding balloons worldwide in the a
tmosphere in order to measure atmospheric properties in situ. Despite the
wide usage of these balloons\, their characteristics have been poorly stud
ied so far\, in particular regarding their flight properties. In this talk
\, I will present a model to describe the ascent of sounding balloons\, wh
ich I developed at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science (ETHZ
) during my Master's thesis. Contrary to previous models\, it accounts for
both the variation of the drag coefficient with altitude and the heat imb
alance between the balloon and the atmosphere. As an example of the potent
ial applications of this model\, I will show on a particular case how the
air vertical velocity can be reconstructed by comparing the measured ascen
t rate with the modeled one.
