DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jean-Philippe Vert\nProf. Jean-Philippe Vert is a resear
cher interested in machine learning and computational biology\, working as
:\n\n	Senior researcher at Google Brain in Paris\n	Research professor at t
he Centre for Computational Biology at Mines ParisTech.\n\nAbstract:\nSort
ing and ranking an array are fundamental routines in machine learning\, us
ed to compute rank-based statistics\, cumulative distribution functions (C
DFs)\, quantiles\, or to select closest neighbors and labels. The sorting
and ranking functions are however piecewise constant (the sorting permutat
ion of a vector does not change if the entries of that vector are infinite
simally perturbed) and therefore have no gradient information to back-prop
agate. In this talk\, I will discuss different approaches to design differ
entiable sorting and ranking operators\, using regularization or perturbat
ion techniques\, and highlight some applications in learning to rank or ma
trix factorization.\n\n\nThe Center for Intelligent Systems at EPFL (CIS)
is a collaboration among IC\, SB\, and STI that brings together researcher
s working on different aspects of Intelligent Systems. In June 2020\, CIS
has launched its CIS Colloquia featuring invited notable speakers.\n
