DESCRIPTION:Prof. Elsa A. Olivetti\, MIT\, USA\nFor the past decades\, mat
 erials science has played a role in lowering carbon dioxide emissions from
  the electricity sector through development of renewable energy generation
  and high-performance energy storage technologies. However\, outside of th
 e energy sector there remain significant greenhouse gas emissions linked t
 o materials production\, particularly because of growth in the build envir
 onment infrastructure and chemicals manufacture. This presentation describ
 es the significant challenge of reducing the burden of materials productio
 n. I will review progress in understanding the potential for decarbonizati
 on in cement\, metals (including steel\, aluminum\, and copper) and chemic
 als manufacture including inputs to production\, the transformation proces
 ses itself as well as the design of desired outputs. I will address undere
 xplored areas and outline ways to identify potential for the materials com
 munity to have impact leveraging the capability to innovate along length s
 cales from atoms to materials markets.\n
