CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:Aim:  The AACR-The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research “Sci
ence of the Patient” (SOP) Grants Program represents a joint effort to s
timulate novel research aimed at understanding the influence of the biolog
 y of the host (i.e.\, patient) on the genesis\, development\, treatment\,
and survivorship of cancer. Successful projects should emphasize the inter
play of host physiological systems with the tumor and/or tumor microenviro
nment.\n\nThe proposed research must represent a highly innovative approac
h to a major problem or challenge in cancer research\, with an emphasis on
understanding the influence of the biology of the host on the genesis\, d
evelopment\, treatment\, and sequelae of cancer. Projects should contextua
lize cancer in the human body by studying the interplay of physiological s
ystems (e.g.\, endocrine\, nervous\, or  systems) with the tumor and the
therapies used to treat the patient. Laboratory-based investigations of al
l stages of the patient journey will be considered (e.g.\, studies examini
ng the impact of patient physiology on cancer risk\, diagnosis\, prognosis
\, therapeutic response\, adverse events\, and survivorship). The funded p
rojects are expected to catalyze important advances in the field and shoul
d have a potentially transformative impact on future clinical practice.\n\
 nFunding:         USD $750’000\n\nDuration:        3 years\
n\nEligibility: Applicants must have a doctoral degree (including PhD\, MD
\, MD/PhD\, or equivalent) in a related field. Applications will be accept
ed from independent investigators who are affiliated with an academic\, me
dical\, or research institution anywhere in the world.\n\nApplicants shoul
d be AACR members. Annual dues are not required for early-career researche
rs interested in Associate membership. Nonmembers interested in this grant
opportunity must submit a satisfactory application for AACR membership\,
and be members in good standing\, by the Letter of Intent deadline. Nonmem
bers can apply for membership using the Official Application for Membershi
p submitted to the AACR with the required documents or apply online.\n\nGr
ant recipient must attend the Grants Reception and Dinner at the AACR Annu
al meeting 2021 (13-04-21) to formally accept the grant. Grant funds may b
e used to support the grantee’s registration and attendance at this Annu
al Meeting.\n\nHow to Apply: The first stage of the application process is
submission of a Letter of Intent (LOI). The LOI is limited to two pages a
nd must describe the proposed cancer research project\, including the spec
ific aims and rationale\, significance and statement of innovation\, and p
otential clinical impact. Relevant references must be attached and are lim
ited to two pages. The LOI must also be accompanied by a Scientific Abstra
ct and the Applicant's biographical sketch. LOIs will be peer-reviewed by
a Scientific Review Committee\; A limited number of applicants whose LOI a
re deemed most meritorious will be invited by the committee to submit full
applications.\n\nAACR requires applicants to submit their LOIs using the
proposalCENTRAL website. If EPFL will serve as your host institution\, ple
ase use the following institution name in proposalCENTRAL: Ecole Polytechn
ique Fédérale de Lausanne EPFL.  \n\nYou can find more information abou
t the application format in the Program Guidelines. Note that among the su
pporting documents to be included\, you must enclose a signature page whic
h requires an institutional signature. For this\, please contact the Resea
rch Office.\n\nDeadline\, Letter of Intent:    13 July 2020 (1:00 pm EST
 )\nDeadline\, Full Proposal:         06 October 2020 (1:00 pm EST)\
