DESCRIPTION:ArtLab reopens to the public by hosting the prestigious Prix P
ictet photography exhibition. Entitled Hope\, the exhibition features the
work of the 12 finalists. Their creations explore the environmental and so
cial crises facing humanity while infusing the subject matter with positiv
e impetus\, bringing welcome inspiration in a time of uncertainty.\n\n[Sig
n up for the lunch tours: a guided tour of the exhibition during the lunch
break and a complimentary snack\, an offer reserved for the EPFL-UNIL com
munity].\n\nFor its reopening in September\, ArtLab is moving away from it
s usual programming focused on the interface between art\, science and tec
hnology to host Hope. This photo exhibition presents the work of the 12 f
inalists of the 2019 Prix Pictet award\, selected from over 600 nominees.
\n\nThe images reveal moments of triumph in the face of adversity\, and
the product of efforts made to preserve the environment. Together\, they d
emonstrate how optimism can encourage change.\n\nThe winning series Ca va
aller [It will be okay]\, by Ivorian photographer Joana Choumali\, asse
rts itself in a subtle and discrete manner. The images\, captured on a sma
rtphone three weeks after the terrorist attacks of March 13\, 2016 in Gran
d-Bassam\, are enhanced with abstract embroidery. The long process of orna
mentation acts as means of catharsis\, an act of resilience.\n\nThe exhibi
tion directly echoes the words of Kofi Annan\, former President of the Pri
x Pictet\, who in his final speech at the award ceremony in November 2017
stated\,  "Perhaps in our ability to carry on in adversity lies hope for
us all."\n\nThe exhibition will be held in ArtLab’s Pavilion B\, from S
eptember 4 to October 4\, 2020\, Admission is free.\nOpen from Tuesdays to
Sundays\, 11am to 6pm\n\n(Picture: Shahidul Alam\, Fatema shows off her
