rected Technical Change: Evidence from the Abrogation of the Bracero Progr
am in 1964"\nDiscussant: Ethan Lewis (Dartmouth College)\n\n\nAbstract\nIn
1964\, around 11% of agricultural workers in America were prevented from
entering the labor force. Using a text-search algorithm allocating patents
to crops\, I show that a negative labor-supply shock induced a sharp incr
ease in innovation in technologies related to more affected crops. The eff
ect is stronger for technology related to labor-intensive production tasks
.\n\nKeywords: Directed Technical Change\, Labor Supply\, Induced Innovati
 on\, Automation\, Im-\nmigration Restrictions\, Bracero\n\n\nEPFL Virtual
Innovation Seminar\nEVIS is a bi-weekly virtual seminar series focusing on
Science\, Technology and Innovation topics studied through the lens of Ec
 onomics\, Entrepreneurship\, Strategy and Finance.\n
