DESCRIPTION:Dr. Eric Kerrigan\, Department of Aeronautics\, Department of
 Electrical and Electronic Engineering\, Imperial College\, London\, UK.\nT
his talk will discuss how modern computing architectures can open up new p
ossibilities for the practice and theory of control engineering. The first
part of the talk will show how custom parallel digital circuits can be de
signed to efficiently implement embedded optimization solvers such as tho
se arising in model predictive control. The second part will show how idea
s from control theory can be used to design a new method for solving syste
ms of equations with positive definite matrices and that this new method
can outperform existing linear solvers when implemented on custom parallel
digital circuits. The talk will conclude with some research questions and
theoretical problems that have arisen while working at this interface bet
 ween control and computing.
