 menez-Martinez\nGroup leader at EAWAG and ETH Zürich\n\nThe interplay of 
 fluid mixing\, chemical reactions and microbial processes in soils\n\nSoil
  is a porous and topologically complex environment\, characterized by high
  spatio-temporal variability and often fragmented aqueous habitats. The fl
 ow field in soils is a heterogeneous mosaic of high and low velocities\, r
 heological properties\, and partially miscible or immiscible phases (e.g.\
 , air and contaminants)\, each of which controls chemical mixing and react
 ions. The biochemical activities of microbes play major roles in the contr
 ol of pore-scale fluid dynamics and the cycling of nutrients\, trace eleme
 nts\, and contaminants in soils. In this seminar\, we will first consider 
 the consequences of fluid flow and mixing on the kinetics of fluid-fluid r
 eactions in soils. Second\, we will focus on the interplay between hydrody
 namics and microbial processes\, including bacterial chemotaxis and respir
 ation.\n\nShort bio:\nAfter graduating (BSc) in Geological Sciences from U
 niversity of Granada (Spain)\, and to obtain the Certificate of Advanced S
 tudies in Geotechnical Engineering (MSc) at the Technical University of Ca
 talonia (Barcelona\, Spain) in 2007\, he obtained a PhD degree in Subsurfa
 ce Hydrology at the same university in 2010. He strengthened his research 
 formation as Postdoctoral Fellow at the CNRS-University of Rennes 1 in Fra
 nce (2010-2012)\, where he was awarded the International Chair on Environm
 ent and Innovation (Foundation Rennes 1) (2012-2014)\, and as Post-doc Res
 earch Associate at Los Alamos National Laboratory\, US (2014-2016). In 201
 6\, he joined Eawag and ETH Zurich as leader of the Subsurface Environment
 al Processes group and as Lecturer of Groundwater.\n
