DESCRIPTION:Aim:  CURE funds research that has the potential to truly tra
 nsform and save lives. This award seeks to promote the careers of young in
 vestigators to allow them to develop a research focus independent of their
  mentor(s). Researchers may propose basic or clinical studies\, but this a
 ward mechanism is not intended to support clinical trials. Research that i
 nvolves collaboration and a multidisciplinary approach is desirable. Appli
 cants will be required to discuss how this avenue of research is independe
 nt from their mentor’s research and will lead them to a path of independ
 ent epilepsy research. We encourage studies that will provide new directio
 ns for epilepsy therapy\, prevention and\, ultimately\, a cure and that wi
 ll allow applicants to collect the data necessary to support grant applica
 tion to the National Institutes of Health or similar granting agency.\n\nT
 he following priority areas reflect CURE Epilepsy’s focus on advances th
 at have the potential to truly transform and save lives. Prevention\, dise
 ase modification and elimination are critical goals and consistent with ou
 r mission.\n\n	Transformative research to enhance our understanding of the
  cellular\, molecular\, genetic and systems-level mechanisms that lead to 
 any of the epilepsies\, facilitating the continued investigation of diseas
 e-modifying or preventative strategies\n	Innovative approaches that can pr
 event\, modify and/or arrest the development of acquired epilepsy. Example
 s include epilepsy that develops after stroke\, tumor\, traumatic brain in
 jury or infection\, including febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome 
 (FIRES) as well new-onset refractory status-epilepticus (NORSE)\n	Research
  that will inform the development of novel therapies to prevent onset or h
 alt the progression of the severe pediatric epilepsies\n	Research focused 
 on new\, effective treatments for the >30% of the epilepsy population who 
 are pharmacoresistant\n	Novel research that furthers our understanding of 
 the causes and ultimate elimination of SUDEP\n	Translational\, clinical\, 
 and clinically informed basic research that will facilitate understanding 
 of the cellular-\, molecular-\, and systems-level mechanisms that underlie
  the relationships between sleep and epilepsy\n\n\nFunding:        m
 ax. $100\,000\n\nDuration:      1 year\n\nEligibility: Applicants must
  generally fall into one of the following categories to be eligible for th
 e Taking Flight Award:\n\n\n	A senior postdoctoral fellow who has a minimu
 m of 3 years postdoctoral experience.\n	A researcher with an appointment a
 s an Instructor or Research Assistant Professor who has yet to obtain sign
 ificant funding (e.g.\, RO1 grant or equivalent) and has an on-site mentor
  committed to advising the applicant.\n	A faculty member at the assistant 
 professor level who is within one year of having been appointed.\n	A clini
 cal fellow who is pursuing a residency in the following areas: neurology\,
  neurosurgery or neurocritical care\, and considering an epilepsy focused 
 fellowship.\n	Researchers who have already received significant funding (e
 .g.\, NIH K99 award or equivalent) are not eligible for CURE Epilepsy fund
 ing.\n\n\nHow to Apply: All applicants must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI
 ). The LOI should  include a scientific summary and sections on future di
 rections and award relevance\, as indicated in the RFA. LOIs and full prop
 osals (by invitation) must be submitted through proposalCENTRAL. To begin 
 an application\, applicants will need to create a professional profile\, i
 f one does not already exist. If EPFL will serve as your host institution\
