CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:The Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JP
ND) is the largest global research initiative aimed at tackling the challe
nge of neurodegenerative diseases. This Joint Programme is funded by the p
articipating countries’ funding agencies\, including the SNSF for Switze
 rland.\nFor the 2021 call\, the JPND initiative has announced a EUR 19 M t
ransnational call for ambitious\, innovative\, multinational and multidisc
iplinary collaborative research projects with a view to promoting research
aimed at the detection\, measurement and understanding of early disease i
ndicators related to neurodegenerative diseases\, with potential for the d
evelopment of new diagnostics or interventions. The SNSF has allocated CHF
  600’000 for Swiss-based grantees from 2 research groups.\nProposals mus
t focus on one or several of the following\nNeurodegenerative diseases:\n\
 n	Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias\,\n	Parkinson’s disease and
 PD-related disorders\,\n	Prion diseases\,\n	Motor neuron diseases\,\n	Spin
ocerebellar ataxia (SCA)\,\n	Huntington’s disease\,\n	Spinal muscular at
rophy (SMA).\n\nTypes of research:\n\n\n	Demonstrating the relationship be
tween early neurodegenerative processes and physiological disturbances\, e
.g. by analyzing existing cohorts and longitudinal data.\n	Applying cuttin
g-edge methods or technologies to improve the detection of early symptoms\
, e.g. by establishing innovative biomarkers and increasing the sensitivit
y\, specificity and/or the robustness of the readouts.\n	Human or animal s
tudies to decipher the neurodegeneration-derived processes causing early d
 isease-specific signatures\, e.g. on the neuropathological\, cellular\, sy
naptic\, metabolic or inflammatory level. The use of well-characterised hu
man cohorts’ data is encouraged.\n	Using digital technologies to link re
cognizable symptoms to physiological changes associated to neurodegenerati
 on\, e.g. by combining clinical\, neurophysiological\, biochemical\, imagi
ng and psychological data.\n	Relating prognostic signs of disease with rea
l-life measurement of physiological disturbances using home-monitoring and
/or wearable devices\, including wireless sensors for patient monitoring.\
n\nWho can apply:\n\n\n	International consortia composed of 3-6 researcher
s from at least 3 different participating countries. Partners from other c
ountries can be part of the consortium\, but must secure their own funding
. Applicants can be based at universities (or other higher education insti
tutions)\, non-university public or private research institutes\, hospital
s and other health and social care settings\, as well as commercial compan
ies\, in particular SMEs. Collaborations with companies from outside the t
raditional medical sector (e.g. computing\, artificial intelligence) are w
elcome. Eligibility rules depend on the national funding agencies.\n\n\n\n
Swiss-based applicants: must be eligible for SNSF Project Funding (see EP
FL Instructions for SNSF Project Funding) and cannot participate in more t
han one proposal per call. The SNSF exclusively funds research conducted f
or non-commercial purposes. Please contact research@epfl.ch to verify your
eligibility for the call. In case of several overlapping SNSF projects\,
all projects must significantly distinguish themselves from each other.
 \n\nFunding & Duration: min. CHF 50’000  and max. CHF 300’000 for 12-
36 months (for this call\, the SNSF has allocated CHF 600’000 for 2 proj
 ects).\nTimeline of the call: \n\n\n	Deadline for pre-proposals: 2 March 2
 021 at 15:00 CET.\n	Deadline for full proposals: 29 June 2021 at 15:00 CET
.\n\nApplications must be submitted by the call deadlines via both the JPN
D online submission tool and mySNF.\nFor further information\, please have
a look at the call webpage\, call guidelines\, call procedures (incl. eva
luation criteria and scoring)\, instructions for Swiss-based applicants\,
pre-proposal template\, online submission tool\, as well as the outcome of
  past calls.\n
