DESCRIPTION:Prof. Ivan B. Djordjevic\nQuantum communication (QuCom) harnes
ses the quantum properties of light to enable functionalities unrealizable
by classical techniques. While QuComs have been individually validated in
free-space\, optical fibers\, and between a satellite and ground station\
, a combined heterogeneous quantum communication network (QCN) with multip
le types of channels remains elusive. There are several main barriers to o
vercome before QuComs and QCNs become reality. In this talk we describe di
fferent strategies to overcome these barriers and develop the global\, sec
ure\, and reconfigurable QCNs. We also describe the research activities to
be pursued at EPFL/PSI and proposed MS program in quantum information sci
ence and engineering.\n\nShort bio:\nIvan B. Djordjevic is a professor of
electrical and computer engineering and optical sciences at the University
of Arizona\; director of the Optical Communications Systems Laboratory (O
CSL) and Quantum Communications (QuCom) Lab\; and co-director of the Signa
l Processing and Coding Lab. He is both IEEE Fellow and OSA Fellow. He  r
eceived the Ph.D. degree from the University of Nis\, Yugoslavia\, in 1999
.\nDr. Djordjevic has authored or co-authored eight books and more than 54
0 journal and conference publications. He holds 54 US patents. Dr. Djordje
vic serves as an Area Editor/Associate Editor/Member of the Editorial Boar
d for the following journals: IEEE Communications Letters\, OSA/IEEE Journ
al of Optical Communications and Networking\, IOP Journal of Optics\, Phys
ical Communication Journal (Elsevier)\, Optical and Quantum Electronics (S
pringer)\, and Frequenz (De Gruyter). He received more than $ 5 million in
funding in the last five years.\nPrior to joining the University of Arizo
na\, Dr. Djordjevic held appointments at University of Bristol and Univers
ity of the West of England in UK\, Tyco Telecommunications in USA\, Nation
al Technical University of Athens in Greece\, and State Telecommunication
 Company in Yugoslavia.
