DESCRIPTION:Prof Sahand Jamal Rahi \nTitle: "Using deep learning to track
 brains that bend\, compress\, and stretch."\n\nAbstract:\nQuantitative ins
ights into genetic and cellular systems require the analysis of large imag
ing data sets\, which is currently so time-consuming that it represents a
key bottleneck to research. While machine learning has revolutionized imag
e processing\, methods for analysing 2D images of yeast cells and 4D image
s of C. elegans worm brains have been inefficient and inaccurate. This is
surprising as there are hundreds of yeast laboratories around the world an
d whole-brain imaging of small animals is increasingly popular. For both t
ypes of data\, a myriad of techniques from the computer vision literature
 could\, in principle\, provide a solution but many\, in practice\, are too
inaccurate or difficult to make work. I will present our solution for 2D
yeast image segmentation\, our current work on 4D deforming brains\, and f
 uture research directions.\n\nBio:\nAfter studying mathematics\, physics\,
and biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania\, I completed my PhD i
n theoretical physics studying quantum fluctuation forces at the Massachus
etts Institute of Technology (MIT). I then switched to the intersection of
physics and biology as an Independent Fellow at The Rockefeller Universit
y\, working on experiments and theory in systems biology in yeast. After b
eing hired at EPFL\, I spent an intervening year working on systems neuros
cience in C. elegans at Harvard University.\n\n\nThe Center for Intelligen
t Systems at EPFL (CIS) is a collaboration among IC\,ENAC\, SB\, SV and S
TI that brings together researchers working on different aspects of Intell
igent Systems.\n \nIn order to promote exchanges among researchers and en
courage the creation of new\, collaborative projects\, CIS is organizing a
"Get to know your neighbors" series. Each seminar will consist of one sho
rt overview presentation geared to the general public at EPFL.\n \nThe CI
S seminar will take place live on Zoom: https://epfl.zoom.us/j/89910799721
\nPlease connect to your zoom account using your "@epfl.ch" address\, a
s this live event is only open to the EPFL community\nMonday\,April 19th\,
2021 from 3:15 to 4:15 pm\n\nNB: Video recordings of the seminars will be
made available on our website and published on our social media pages
