DESCRIPTION:Aim: Through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Pro
 gram (CDMRP)\, the Department of Defense is announcing the Amyotrophic Lat
 eral Sclerosis (ALS) Research Program Therapeutic Development Award. suppo
 rts research ranging from validation of therapeutic leads through U.S. Foo
 d and Drug Administration (FDA) Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling st
 udies.  The proposed studies are expected to be empirical in nature and p
 roduct-driven. Applications supported by this award must begin with lead c
 ompounds in hand and must include preliminary data relevant to the phase o
 f development (e.g .Proof of identity and purity\, Selectivity for the int
 ended target over closely related targets Availability of primary and seco
 ndary in vitro bioactivity assays for optimization or structure-activity r
 elationship studies. Availability of proof-of-concept efficacy data in at 
 least one preclinical model system of ALS\, including whole animal and cel
 lular model systems)\nDevelopment or further characterization of validated
  biomarkers\, in parallel to the main therapeutic effort and for use in ev
 entual clinical trials\, is a critical component of the FY21. Efforts may 
 include development/characterization of target engagement biomarkers\, pha
 rmacodynamic biomarkers to measure the biological effect of an investigati
 onal therapeutic\, and/or predictive/cohort-selective biomarkers that indi
 cate whether a specific therapy will be effective in an individual patient

 anizations or institutions are eligible to apply\, and there are no citize
 nship restrictions. Applicants must be independent investigators\, but can
