DESCRIPTION:by John Eichenberger\, PhD student at LMS\nRainfall-induced la
ndslides in steep soil slopes of volcanic origin are a major threat to hum
an lives and infrastructure. Due to their loose structure\, volcanic ash s
lopes are prone to wettinginduced instability phenomena which are not acco
unted for in standard slope stability methods. In this seminar\, physicall
y-based approaches including conceptual and numerical 1D and 2D models are
presented for the analysis of failure initiation and the establishment of
thresholds for measurable eld variables in loose unsaturated slopes subje
cted to rain inltration. Model requirements are discussed with reference t
o the objectives of the analysis and key physical processes in rainfall-in
 duced landslides.
