DESCRIPTION:Milica Topalovic\nArchitecture & Environnement\nSuperonda Talk
 s\, Spring 2021\n\nAGRITERRITORIES\nUrbanisation in the Countryside\n \nM
ilica Topalović\, Zurich\n \nWith nearly half of the total land area on
Earth currently dedicated to some form of agricultural production\, a focu
s on countrysides and on agrarian change is more urgent than ever. Many ty
pes of agricultural practices are linked to climate and biodiversity crise
s\, exhaustion of natural resources\, depletion of soil fertility\, and di
sadvantaging local population. An awareness of the consequences of industr
ialisation of agriculture\, including its addiction to pesticides\, fertil
isers and fossil fuels\, is growing. These issues call for new approaches
in design disciplines and practices too. But how can then designers respon
d? Can design become ecological\, and go beyond-the-human and beyond-the-b
uilt\, to engage with the environment as a whole?\nMilica Topalović will
talk about urbanisation processes in several countrysides in Europe and th
e world\, and speculate on the possibilities for regional (agro)ecological
design.\n \nBiography\nMilica Topalović is an architect and Associate P
rofessor of Architecture and Territorial Planning at the ETH Zurich Depart
ment of Architecture. Her work in concerned with territories beyond-the-ci
ty and transformation processes they are exposed to\, through the movement
of capital\, social restructuring\, and environmental change. With resear
chers and students at the ETH Architecture of Territory\, Topalović under
took many territorial studies and projects in Europe\, South Asia and othe
r parts of the world\, in an effort to decenter and “ecologize” archit
ect’s approaches to the urban\, and urbanisation. In their recent work\,
they have been looking at regions marked by unsustainable agriculture and
resource harvesting practices\, in order to design their transitions towa
rd territories organized around the principles of agroecology. \n\nSupero
nda Talks \n\nArchizoom supports this semester the reflections developed
in the History and Theory of the Environment course given in Bachelor 1
at the EPFL by Sébastien Marot. A course that invites us to understand to
what extent environmental concerns today lead us to rethink the meaning a
nd principles of architecture and other project based disciplines. This se
ries of lectures aims to explore how architects and urban planners can und
erstand environmental concerns today\, and how they can stimulate our imag
ination and our responsibilities.\n\nProgramme produced in collaboration w
ith Sebastien Marot and Raphael Bach.
