DESCRIPTION:Orane Pouchon et David Strütt\, Institut de mathématiques de
l'EPFL\, accompagnés de plusieurs étudiants de l’EPFL\nUnderstand an
d visualize their logic with Minecraft and dominoes: This is what this Su
mmer school\, organized by the EPFL Education Outreach Department together
with the Mathematics institute\, offers from July 5 to 8\, 2021.\n\nA cal
culator is a reassuring companion during math tests. But how does it work?
And how can we be sure that it displays the correct result?\nDuring this
pre-university week\, the participants will answer such questions while de
signing a calculator.\n\nTo do so\, they will learn how to use binary code
. This code enables the transformation of information into 0s and 1s\, a l
anguage that machines understand. Like small computers\, the calculators t
ranscribe our usual decimal numbers into binary numbers. And this is how 1
3=1101 and 1011+1101=24.\n\nIn order to design a calculator\, the particip
ants will have to use their logic and skills\, while developing algebra an
d computer science concepts (variables\, binary system or truth tables) to
be able to align blocks\, activate levers and finally understand how thei
 r TI-30X works.\n\nOnline registration before 15.05.2021
