 rn and the New Practices of Architectural Archivization\n\nThe “digital
  turn” in architecture in the 1990s gradually led to an “archival turn
 ”\, prompting practitioners to reflect on the techniques of archivizatio
 n\, both traditional and novel. At the same time\, a flurry of concurrent 
 developments in the social sciences and the arts brought archives to the f
 ore of scholarly limelight: the “archival fever” in philosophy (Derrid
 a\, 1996)\, the emergence of the trend of “archival ethnography” in an
 thropology (Sahlins\, 1992) and the “empirical turn” in archival scien
 ce (The American Archivist\, 1996: 59/2). All these developments point tow
 ard the importance to study archives as practice\, and prompt us to ask: W
 hat constitutes an archive in architecture today? What epistemology does i
 t perform? What kind of craft is archiving and how does it relate to desig
 n? Addressing these questions\, the lecture offers insights into the pract
 ices of archivization. It scrutinizes the daily work of digital and paper 
 archivists\, based on ethnographic material from the Canadian Centre for A
 rchitecture (CCA) in Montreal\, a leading archival institution\, and inter
 views with a range of practitioners around the world. Unravelling the mult
 iple epistemic dimensions of archiving allows us to question some well-est
 ablished myths of creativity and authorship in architecture. It opens aven
 ues for exploring the new technologies of archivization and their pivotal 
 impact on architectural practice today.\n\n\nShort bio:\nAlbena Yaneva is 
 Professor of Architectural Theory at the University of Manchester\, UK. H
 er research is intrinsically transdisciplinary and crosses the boundaries
  of architectural theory\, science and technology studies\, cognitive an
 thropology and political philosophy. She has been Visiting Professor at P
 rinceton School of Architecture (2013)\, Parsons\, New School (2015) and
  Politecnico di Turino (2018)\, and held the prestigious Lise Meitner Vis
 iting Chair in Architecture at the University of Lund\, Sweden (2017-2019
 ). Yaneva is the author of several books: The Making of a Building (P
 eter Lang 2009)\, Made by the OMA: An Ethnography of Design (010 Publi
 shers 2009)\, Mapping Controversies in Architecture (Routledge 2012)\,
  Five Ways to Make Architecture Political. An Introduction to the Polit
 ics of Design Practice (Bloomsbury 2017)\, Crafting History: Archiving a
 nd the Quest for Architectural Legacy (Cornell University Press 2020) 
 and The New Architecture of Science: Learning from Graphene (World Sci
 entific Publishing 2020)\, co-authored with Nobel Laureate in Physics Sir
  Kostya S. Novoselov. Her work has been translated into French\, German\,
  Italian\, Spanish\, Portuguese\, Thai\, Polish\, Turkish and Japanese. 
 Yaneva is the recipient of the RIBA President’s Award for Outstanding U
 niversity-located Research 2010.\n
