  is the Grassmann manifold\, which consists of all p-dimensional linear su
 bspaces of R^n. We will first review a few applications where the Grassman
 n manifold appears\; they range from machine learning\, computer vision an
 d image processing to low-rank matrix optimization problems\, dynamic low-
 rank decompositions and model reduction. We will explain in what sense thi
 s set is a manifold. We will then go over a few essential facts and formul
 ae on the geometry of the Grassmann manifold in a fashion that is fit for 
 tackling the aforementioned applications with matrix-based algorithms.\n\n
 This talk is based on joint work with Thomas Bendokat and Ralf Zimmermann.
