DESCRIPTION:Anne-Florence Bitbol (EPFL)\nWe are delighted to announce that
the next seminar of TheBioNet will take place on Wednesday\, 28 April\, 2
 021\, 16:00-17:00\, over Zoom\nSpeaker: Anne-Florence Bitbol (EPFL)\nTitle
: Impact of population spatial structure on mutant fixation probabilities\
, from models on graphs to the gut\n\nMicrobial populations often have com
plex spatial structures\, with homogeneous competition holding only at a l
ocal scale. Population structure can strongly impact evolution\, in partic
ular by affecting the fixation probability of mutants. Anne-Florence Bitbo
l will first discuss a general model for describing structured population
s on graphs. Then she will show that the specific structure of the gut wit
h gradients of food and bacterial concentrations can increase the fixation
probability of neutral mutants\, which can have consequences for the dive
 rsity of the microbiota.\n----------------------\n\nYoutube channel\nThe r
ecordings from November and December of 2020 are now online at our new you
 tube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLE3zOl0UpY0Ylw8RSXwpCA\nWe
will also post recordings of upcoming talks.\n\nAbout us\nThe aim of TheB
ioNet is to build a community of researchers working on diverse topics in
mathematical and theoretical biology in Western Switzerland. Every semeste
r we are holding seminars every two weeks where we have invited researcher
s from Western Switzerland working in theoretical and mathematical biology
 .\n\nOn behalf of the organizing team\nthebionet.ch\ntwitter: @thebionet\n
