 nCities play a pivotal role in addressing global socio-ecological challen
 ges. They are responsible for more than 2/3 to 3/4 of energy use\, waste p
 roduction\, and greenhouse gas emissions yet they only host 50% of the glo
 bal population. In addition the rate of urbanisation will continue to incr
 ease and most of the future urbanites will live in cities that have not be
 en built yet. As such\, assessing the resource requirement of cities\, ide
 ntifying their drivers and proposing systemic policies to mitigate the for
 mer becomes an urgent and necessary step to face local and global socio-ec
 ological challenges. This presentation will showcase "urban metabolism" as
  a lens to assess resource use and pollution emission flows of cities and
  how it can be utilized to create mitigation policies.\n\nShort biography
 :\nDr Athanassiadis is a senior researcher at the Ecole Polytechnique Féd
 érale de Lausanne (HERUS) and the non-profit organisation Metabolism of C
 ities. From 2018 to 2020 he was Chair of Circular Economy and Urban Metab
 olism at the Université Libre de Bruxelles where he attempted to build b
 ridges between the academia\, public administrations and “circular” ac
 tors in order to accelerate Brussels’ transition towards a more circular
  economy and metabolism. During the last years\, he has collaborated with 
 more than 10 cities around the world to assess their material flows and de
 velop circular economy and resource management roadmaps. Finally\, Aristid
 e is the co-founder of Metabolism of Cities\, an open science initiative t
 hat develops open source tools for assessing the environmental flows of ci
 ties (www.metabolismofcities.org) \n
