DESCRIPTION:Noémie Mandon (Instant-Lab\, EPFL)\nAbstract The tourbillon
was invented in 1795 by Neuchatel born watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet i
n order to negate the effect of gravity on pocket watches while in differe
nt vertical positions\, as they were worn by men of that time. With the ad
vent of wristwatches in the 20th Century\, its usefulness became moot\, as
wristwatches take on all orientations. Multiple axis tourbillons were inv
ented in order to average all possible orientations of a watch. However\,
the mechanisms which have been realised all have an intrinsic geometric pr
operty which results in a distribution defect. To resolve this means distr
 ibuting points uniformly on a sphere\, a well-known mathematical problem\,
and a simple method based on a famous theorem of Archimedes was chosen. I
ts mechanisation was inspired by the Antikythera mechanism of Antiquity. T
he resulting mechanism can be directly implemented in a multi-axis tourbil
lon with much improved orientational distribution.\n\nBio I'm an exchange
student in Mechanical Engineering at EPFL. I come from Burgundy in France
and my home institution is Les Arts et Métiers Paristech.\n\n
