CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) and ETH Strategic Foc
us Area “Personalized Health and Related Technologies” (PHRT) have lau
nched a joint call for proposals for National Data Streams (NDS).\n\nWith
its joint call for proposals\, SPHN and PHRT invites multidisciplinary con
sortia to invest into developing a sustainable and reusable data landscape
to support present and future research projects. The call is open to appl
icants from all disciplines of data-driven health research.\n\nNDS are mul
tidisciplinary consortia research structures involving a national network
of clinical and science/engineering partners. NDS that build on pre-existi
ng infrastructures and data sets are preferred\, and should encompass clin
ical as well as analytical (e.g.\, multi-omics) data. NDS data must be mad
e FAIR (findable\, accessible\, interoperable\, reusable) and of good qual
ity suited for scientific analysis.\n\nSPHN and PHRT will together allocat
e up to CHF 20 million. Each NDS can be funded for up to 36 months with a
total of up to CHF 3-5 million from SPHN and PHRT (max. CHF 2.5 million fr
om SPHN and PHRT each\, excl. matching funds). The funding regulations of b
oth programs\, SPHN and PHRT\, must be fulfilled to receive the full amoun
t:\n\n	Funding by SPHN requires matching contributions by the applicants
’ institutions.\n	Funding by PHRT requires full participation of affilia
tes of the ETH Domain in the NDS consortium.\n\n\nWho can apply:\n\n\n	Eac
h proposal submission requires the designation of a main applicant (design
ated NDS director) responsible for corresponding with SPHN and\, if applic
able\, a second main applicant from the ETH Domain (designated NDS co-dire
ctor) responsible for corresponding with PHRT.\n	The main applicants need
to be employed as faculty (or equivalent) for the entire duration of the p
roject at a higher education institution (ETH/EPFL\, universities\, univer
sities of applied sciences)\, or university hospital in Switzerland.\n	Mai
n applicants must have proven experience in managing large and ambitious c
linical research environments.\n	Faculties\, PIs or group leaders (or simi
lar) employed at SPHN partner institutions\, i.e.\, Swiss higher education
institutions (ETH Domain\, universities\, universities of applied science
 s) and university hospitals act as co-applicants for NDS proposals and are
fully eligible to receive SPHN funding.\n	Wider participation of various
institutions is desired. As a general rule\, costs for all associated appl
icants combined should not exceed 20% of the total grant from SPHN.\n	For-
profit organizations are invited to collaborate with an NDS consortium led
by a SPHN partner institution and may participate as associated applicant
s on a project basis\; however\, they must cover their efforts with their
own resources.\n\n\nFunding and duration: Max. CHF 5 million for 36 months
\n\nEligible costs:\n\n\n	Personnel costs\, including costs of project man
agement.\n	Equipment costs linked to the development and implementation of
the research data management systems (IT hardware\, software and licenses
).\n	Usage fees linked to the usage of IT resources.\n	Costs related to in
formation management and data analysis.\n	Costs for building the necessary
infrastructures.\n	Research costs incurred by ETH Domain consortium membe
rs should be covered by PHRT.\n	No overheads shall be paid for SPHN-funded
projects.\n\n\nSubmission process:\n\n\n	The selection process comprises
two steps:\n	\n Submission and evaluation of outline proposals\n Submiss
ion and evaluation of full proposals\n	\n	\n	From the received outline pro
posals\, five to six applications will be selected for submitting a full p
roposal. Of those\, three to four NDS projects can be funded\n	Application
s must be submitted to nds@sphn.ch (for SPHN funding applications) or to n
ds@sphn.ch and phrt-office@ethz.ch (for SPHN and PHRT funding applications
).\n\n\nTimeline of the call:\n\n\n	Submission deadline for outline propos
 als: 22 August 2021\n	Invitation to submit a full proposal: Mid-November 2
021\n	Submission deadline for full proposals: 27 February 2022\n	Final sel
ection: End of May 2022\n\n\nAsk your NDS-related questions during the NDS
workshop on Monday 21 June 2021\, 10-13h. In addition\, the NDS program w
ill be introduced in detail. Register for the workshop here and\, preferab
ly\, submit your questions in advance to nds@sphn.ch. The workshop will be
recorded and uploaded to the SPHN YouTube channel.\n\nFor more informatio
n and application\, please have a look at the call webpage and the call gu
idelines. You will find all application forms\, budget and support letters
templates in the EPFL Toolkit.\n\nPlease contact research@epfl.ch for per
 sonalised advice.
