CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) offers project grants for
interdisciplinary research for researchers employed by an institution of
 the ETH Domain (Eawag\, Empa\, EPFL\, ETH Zürich\, PSI\, WSL).\n\nAs one
of the Strategic Focus Areas of the ETH Domain\, the mission of SDSC is to
accelerate the adoption of data science and machine learning techniques w
ithin academic disciplines of the ETH Domain\, the Swiss academic communit
y at large\, and the industrial sector.\n\nThe goals of the SDSC Collabora
tive Data Science Projects are to help researchers and domain experts leve
rage the state-of-the-art in data science to develop models and analyses t
o support their research. At the same time\, SDSC collaborative schemes ai
m at supporting the application of techniques developed in research labs w
orking on data science methods to real world scenarios.\n\nThrough Collabo
rative Data Science Projects\, the data science team at the SDSC makes ava
ilable to partnering ETH Domain research teams expertise which broadly cov
ers data science modeling techniques including statistics\, statistical si
gnal processing\, machine learning\, deep learning\, and techniques from c
omputer vision\, natural language processing and optimization\, as well as
computational methods for these techniques.\n\nMore information about ong
oing SDSC Collaborative Data Science Projects at https://datascience.ch/ac
ademic-projects/.\n\nThe current call distinguishes between two possible t
racks for collaborative project proposals:\n\n	the general track\, dedicat
ed to Data Science for Domain Science\, as in previous years\n	the new LSI
track\, dedicated to Data Science for Large Scale Infrastructures.\n\n\nT
he general track welcomes submissions in all applications domains\, includ
ing environmental sciences\, life sciences including biology and medicine\
, physical and material sciences\, as well as economics and social science
 s. This year project proposals focusing on Personalized Health (PH)\, that
address clinical research questions\, are particularly welcome.\n\nThe LS
I track is dedicated to Collaborative Data Science projects that are relev
ant for the design\, operation and exploitation of large and complex resea
rch infrastructures\, technology platforms\, sensor networks\, and databas
es\, that are operated by PSI\, Empa\, WSL\, or Eawag. Applicants from all
institutes in the ETH Domain can apply\, as long as the infrastructure is
  eligible.\n\nGeneral conditions:\n\n\n	Eligible Principal Investigator (P
 I) are employed by an institution of the ETH Domain (Eawag\, Empa\, EPFL\,
ETHZ\, PSI\, and WSL).\n	PIs are typically Professors and Senior Collabor
ative Scientists.\n	Two-stages application process\, with submission of pr
e-proposals and full proposals (upon invitation).\n	Continuation of projec
ts funded by a previous call can be submitted. They are considered as new
proposals and subject to the same review criteria as new proposals.\n\n\nD
 uration: max. 24 months\n\nFunding: 200’000 - 600’000 CHF (approx. sam
e amount of funding as in previous years for the general track).\n\nEligib
le costs:\n\n\n	Salary for SDSC technical staff and staff hired in the par
tnering laboratories. It is expected that the laboratories contribute in k
ind to the project.\n	Compute and Storage Resources\n	Travel costs to orga
nize meetings and costs for dissemination of the project results (open acc
 ess publications\, participation to conferences)\n\n\nSubmission:\nUsing t
he Pre-proposal template. Submission through the dedicated website.\n\nTim
 eline:\nDeadline for submission of pre-proposals: 9 July 2021 (23:59 CEST)
 \nSubmission of full-proposals (upon invitation): 25 October 2021 (23:59 C
EST)\nFinal decision: 7 February 2022\nExpected project start: between Mar
 ch-June 2022\n\nFor further information\, please have a look at the call w
ebpage\, call Documents\, or contact the Program Manager at program.manage
 r@datascience.ch.
