DESCRIPTION:Dr Abbas Alloul\n09:30 – 10:30 – Dr Abbas Alloul\nPostdoct
oral researcher\, University of Antwerp\, Belgium\n\nToward wastewater tre
atment and bioproduct recovery with phototrophic purple bacteria\n\nAquacu
lture and animal husbandry rely on protein ingredients for primary nutriti
on\, yet ingredients such as fishmeal and soybean meal cause serious envir
onmental problems and expose Europe to an import dependency. Microbial bio
mass as a source of animal protein\, also known as microbial protein or si
ngle-cell protein\, offers a solution. In particular when produced on wast
ewater as it allows to combine treatment and resource recovery in an econo
mically-friendly manner. Especially\, the phototrophic purple bacteria sho
w great potential as they can be selectively grown on wastewater (i.e.\, l
ow microbial diversity and high abundance of one species). This is particu
larly relevant for animal feed as stability in community composition might
yield stability in nutritional quality. This lecture will discuss several
operational strategies to selectively grow purple bacteria on wastewater
in closed photobioreactors and open raceway reactors. A cost-estimations w
ill show the competitiveness of the protein production technology. Case st
udies of piloting work in India and The Netherlands will also be introduce
d to show the implementation of the technology in an urban context. The la
st section will present evidence for the use of purple bacteria as a prote
in ingredient and probiotic for penaeid shrimp.\n\nShort bio:\nDr. Abbas A
lloul obtained his master of Chemistry and Bioprocess Technology from Ghen
t University. His master’s thesis explored wastewater treatment for spac
e applications in the context of the Micro-Ecological Life Support System
Alternative. This preliminary research experience drove him towards an aca
demic career. After a successful defense\, Abbas was awarded a Doctoral Fe
llowship by the Research Foundation – Flanders. His PhD research at the
University of Antwerp and Ghent University explored the production of purp
le bacteria on wastewater as a source of microbial protein. UAntwerp appre
ciated his accomplishments and honored Abbas with the ‘Young scientist e
ncouragement award’ and selected him as a ‘young potential’ represen
tative for the Autumn Concert of the Belgian King Philippe. In 2020\, he s
tarted his postdoctoral research at UAntwerp and the Delft University of T
echnology. At UAntwerp\, he combines activities as a researcher\, scientif
ic coordinator\, co-supervisor and co-lecturer. In Delft\, Abbas is active
in the team of prof. David Weissbrodt. Together with a master’s student
\, he is constructing a mechanistic model to simulate the treatment perfor
mance and abundance of purple bacteria. Recently\, Abbas was awarded a pos
tdoctoral fellowship from the Research Foundation - Flanders. In this proj
ect\, he will continue to explore purple bacteria\, with a focus on photoh
 ydrogenotrophy and photomethylotrophy.
