DESCRIPTION:Aim: Facebook is pleased to invite university faculty to respo
 nd to the new call for research proposals on Foundational Integrity Resear
 ch: Misinformation and Polarization\, exploring the societal issues of mis
 information and polarization related to social communication technologies 
 Successful proposals will aim at enriching our understanding of challenges
  related to misinformation\, polarization\, information quality\, and soci
 al conflict on social media and social technology platforms. Proposals sho
 uld aim at developing a shared understanding across the broader scientific
  community and technology industry on how social technology companies can 
 better address social issues on their platforms. Research is not restricte
 d to focusing on Facebook Inc. apps and technologies.\n\nProposals are enc
 ouraged with the following two emphases:\n\n	Studies that draw on traditio
 nal social science methods like interviews\, surveys\, ethnographic observ
 ation\, content analyses\, and survey/behavioral experiments\, or innovati
 ve mixed methodological approaches that combine these methods.\n	Comparati
 ve research and inclusion of non-Western regions that have experienced a g
 rowth in social media platform use\, including South and Central America\,
  Sub-Saharan and North Africa\, the Middle East\, and Central\, South\, an
 d Southeast Asia. We encourage proposals from researchers\, or collaborati
 ons with researchers\, based in the country/countries being researched.\n\
 nAreas of interest include\, but are not limited to:\n\n\n	Affective polar
 ization and online conflict:\n	Misinformation versus authoritative content
 :\n	Climate change on social media:\n	Information processing around sensat
 ional\, hateful\, divisive\, or provocative problematic content\n	Dangerou
 s speech\, conflict\, and violence\n	Misinformation across formats\n	News\
 , trust\, and information quality\n	Cross-platform information ecosystem u
 nderstanding\n	Digital literacy\, demographics\, and misinformation\n	Rest
 rictions on online expression\n\nFunding:  Award amounts will be provided
  at two levels\, $50\,000 USD or $100\,000 USD\, as unrestricted gifts ( $
 1\,000\,000 USD to be allocated in total).\nEligibility:\n\n\n	Institution
 s must be academic institutions or non-governmental organizations with rec
 ognized legal status in their respective country (equal to 501(c)(3) statu
 s under the United States Internal Revenue Code).\n	Applicants must be the
  Principal Investigator (PI) on any resulting award. All funding will be d
 irected to the PI’s host institution.\n	PIs may submit one proposal per 
 solicitation. Multiple proposals from the same institution are acceptable.
  However\, PIs may not be a supporting researcher on another application.\
 n	Awards must comply with applicable U.S. and international laws\, regulat
 ions\, and policies.\n	The award is restricted to social science research 
 that contributes to generalized scientific knowledge and its application. 
 Documentaries\, journalism\, and oral history projects are not eligible fo
 r this solicitation.\n\nHow to Apply: Proposals should include:\n\n\n	 A 
 summary of the project (1-2 pages) explaining the area of focus\, a descri
 ption of techniques\, any relevant prior work\, and a timeline with milest
 ones and expected outcomes.\n	A draft budget description (1 page) includin
 g an approximate cost of the award and explanation of how funds would be s
 pent. Participants will be invited (not required) to attend one virtual or
  in-person meeting with the Facebook research and product teams\; travel a
 nd lodging costs for a trip to Facebook Headquarters in Menlo Park\, Calif
 ornia (or another Facebook location)\, should be included in the proposed
