DESCRIPTION:Prof. Pavan Ramdya\nTitle: Reverse-engineering Drosophila move
 ment control toward applications in robotics\n\nAbstract: A shared goal of
  neuroscience and robotics is to understand how systems can be built to mo
 ve effectively through the world. However\, state-of-the-art algorithms fo
 r selecting and executing limbed behaviors in robots are still quite primi
 tive compared with those used by animals. To inspire better artificial con
 trol approaches and to understand the biology of limb movement control\, w
 e are investigating the fly\, Drosophila melanogaster. I will discuss how 
 we are combining 3D pose estimation\, 2-photon imaging of motor circuits i
 n behaving flies with physics-based simulations and neural network modelin
 g to uncover algorithms giving rise to adaptive and flexible animal behavi
 ors.\n\nBio: Pavan Ramdya\, Firmenich Next Generation Chair of Neuroengine
 ering\, is the Director of the Neuroengineering Laboratory at EPFL in Laus
 anne\, Switzerland. Dr. Ramdya received his PhD in Neurobiology from Harva
 rd University and then performed postdoctoral work in robotics and neuroge
 netics at EPFL and UNIL\, then bioengineering at Caltech. His laboratory a
 ims to draw inspiration from insects in order to design more intelligent r
 obotic controllers. To accomplish this\, they use computational\, engineer
 ing\, genetic\, and microscopy approaches to investigate how neural popula
 tion dynamics\, biomechanics\, and gene expression sculpt complex limb-dep
 endent behaviors in Drosophila melanogaster. In recognition of his work\, 
 he has been awarded an HFSP Career Development Award\, a Swiss National Sc
 ience Foundation Eccellenza Grant\, the UNIL Young Investigator Award in B
 asic Science\, and is a member of the FENS-Kavli Network of Excellence.\n\
 nThe Center for Intelligent Systems at EPFL (CIS) is a collaboration among
  IC\, ENAC\, SB\; SV and STI that brings together researchers working on d
 ifferent aspects of Intelligent Systems.\nIn order to promote exchanges am
 ong researchers and encourage the creation of new\, collaborative projects
