DESCRIPTION:Prof. Semyon Malamud\nTitle: The Economy as a Complex (Intelli
 gent?) System: Using Mathematics and Data Science to Understand (and Impro
 ve) the World we Live in\n\nAbstract: The economy is a complex interacting
  system of four types of (potentially intelligent) agents: households/indi
 viduals\, firms\, governments\, and central banks. In this talk\, I will d
 iscuss theoretical and empirical aspects of modeling the behavior of these
  agents\, their interactions\, and economic equilibrium. I will show how m
 ethods from mathematics\, information theory\, statistical physics\, and c
 omputer science can be used to shed light on some of the key aspects of th
 e functioning of our society. I will also present some exciting challenges
  and open questions.\n\nBio: Semyon Malamud is an Associate Professor of F
 inance at the Swiss Finance Institute at EPFL (CDM). He received his Ph.D.
  in Mathematics from ETH Zurich in 2006 and has been an Assistant Professo
 r at the ETH Zurich Mathematics Department prior to moving to EPFL in 2010
 . His research focuses on mathematical models of (different parts of) the 
 economy.\nThe Center for Intelligent Systems at EPFL (CIS) is a collaborat
 ion among IC\, ENAC\, SB\; SV and STI that brings together researchers wor
 king on different aspects of Intelligent Systems.\nIn order to promote exc
 hanges among researchers and encourage the creation of new\, collaborative
  projects\, CIS is organizing a "Get to know your neighbors" series. Each 
 seminar will consist of one short overview presentation geared to the gene
