DESCRIPTION:Prof. Josie Hughes\nTitle: Improving Robot Design: Data-Driven
Approaches to Design & Fabrication\n\nAbstract: Automating the design and
creation of complex robots is challenging due to the complexity of the de
sign search space and physical processes required.  To address this\, dat
a-driven approaches are required to understand how to design and optimize
robotic structures for a given task.  This talk introduces a number of te
chniques and processes for the design of robots\, focusing on automated de
sign\, rapid fabrication\, and task-specific learning.  This includes app
roaches ranging from biologically inspired design\, to developing terrain
optimized robots by searching over 10\,000s of possible designs\, and expl
oiting simulation and modelling.  Different application scenarios for the
se approaches are also presented. This includes robots for agriculture\, s
oft swimming robots and also sensorized manipulators. The talk concludes w
ith a vision for the future in which bespoke robots can be automatically c
reated for a given task.\n\nBio: Josie Hughes recently started as an Assis
tant Professor at EPFL in the Institute for Mechanical Engineering where s
he leads the CREATE Lab.  The lab focuses on developing new methods and a
pproaches for designing robotic technologies for applications ranging from
agriculture\, soft robotics and manipulation.  Prior to EPFL she previou
sly worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Distributed Roboti
cs Lab\, MIT\, working on computational design methods\, wearable technolo
gies and new novel robot fabrication methods.   This followed her underg
raduate and PhD studies at the University of Cambridge.\n\n\nThe Center fo
r Intelligent Systems at EPFL (CIS) is a collaboration among IC\, ENAC\, S
B\; SV and STI that brings together researchers working on different aspec
ts of Intelligent Systems.\nIn order to promote exchanges among researcher
s and encourage the creation of new\, collaborative projects\, CIS is orga
nizing a "Get to know your neighbors" series. Each seminar will consist of
one short overview presentation geared to the general public at EPFL.
\n\nThe CIS seminar will take place In hybrid mode: Room INF 328 and by
Zoom: https://epfl.zoom.us/j/61206635440  \n\nPlease connect to your zoom
account using your "@epfl.ch" address\, as this live event is only open t
 o the EPFL community\nMonday\, May 2nd\, 2022 from 3:15 to 4:15 pm\nNB: Vi
deo recordings of the seminars will be made available on our website and p
