DESCRIPTION:Dr Anca-Cristina Ferche\n15:00 – 16:00 – Dr Anca-Cristina
 Ferche\nPostdoctoral researcher\, York University\, Canada\n\nFinite Eleme
nt Modelling of Deteriorated Concrete Structures\n\nThe talk will explore
influential behavioural mechanisms that should be considered when modellin
g the response of reinforced concrete structures\, whether they occur due
to deterioration mechanisms or due to loading protocol.\nIconic ancient st
ructures prove concrete’s durability through time. Yet concrete is vulne
rable to a number of factors causing premature deterioration. Among the de
terioration mechanisms are endogenous chemical reactions such as alkali-si
lica reactivity (ASR) that lead to expansion and cracking of concrete whic
h\, in turn\, may result in cover spalling and corrosion of the embedded r
einforcement. Depending on the level of distress\, oftentimes deteriorated
structures require structural assessment to decipher observed behaviour\,
estimate residual capacity\, and inform rehabilitation works.\nThe struct
ural implications of the ASR-induced deterioration and the simultaneously
acting mechanisms that influence the response of damaged structures will b
e examined. Focus will be placed on finite element modelling at a structur
al scale. The approach developed treats reinforced concrete as an orthotro
pic material based on a smeared rotating-crack model within the context of
  a total-load secant-stiffness macro-modelling framework.\nA recently deve
loped crack-slip model suited for the analysis of structures subjected to
cyclic and reversed cyclic loading will also be presented. The crack-slip
mechanism is an energy dissipation source with a pronounced effect on elem
ents subjected to high shear demand and for lightly reinforced structures.
Not accounting for it may lead to dangerously unconservative estimates of
capacity.\n\nShort bio:\nDr. Anca-Cristina Ferche is an Assistant Profess
or in the Department of Civil\, Architectural and Environmental Engineerin
g at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Ferche’s research is focused
on the behaviour and modelling of reinforced concrete structures. Her res
earch interests include the development of advanced computational procedur
es for the performance assessment of reinforced and prestressed concrete s
tructures\, assessment of the structural implications of concrete deterior
ation mechanisms\, rehabilitation of existing concrete structures\, and mo
delling the response of concrete structures subjected to extreme loading c
onditions. They all speak to an overarching interest in contributing to th
e development of robust concrete infrastructure. Dr. Ferche is developing
computational software tools for the analysis of concrete structures which
are being used in academic and industry applications.
