DESCRIPTION:  Prof Susan Murphy\nTitle: We used Reinforcement Learning\;
but did it work?\n\nAbstract: Reinforcement Learning provides an attractiv
e suite of online learning methods for personalizing interventions  in a
Digital Health.  However after an reinforcement learning algorithm has
been run in a clinical study\, how do we assess whether personalization o
ccurred? We might find users for whom it appears that the algorithm has in
deed learned in which contexts the user is more responsive to a particular
intervention. But could this have happened completely by chance? We discu
ss some first approaches to addressing these questions.  \n\nBio: Susan
 A. Murphy\, Professor of Statistics\, Professor of Computer Science at t
he Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and
Radcliffe Alumnae Professor at the Radcliffe Institute\, Harvard Universit
y.\nSusan Murphy’s research focuses on improving sequential\, individual
ized\, decision making in health\, in particular\, clinical trial design a
nd data analysis to inform the development of just-in-time adaptive interv
entions in digital health. She developed the micro-randomized trial for us
e in constructing digital health interventions\; this trial design is in u
se across a broad range of health-related areas. Her lab works on online l
earning algorithms for developing personalized digital health intervention
 s.  Dr. Murphy is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the
National Academy of Medicine\, both of the US National Academies.  In 20
13 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for her work on experimental des
igns to inform sequential decision making.  She is a Past-President of IM
S and of the Bernoulli Society and a former editor of the Annals of Statis
tics. \n\n\nThe Center for Intelligent Systems at EPFL (CIS) is a collabo
ration among IC\, ENAC\, SB\; SV and STI that brings together researchers
working on different aspects of Intelligent Systems. In June 2020\, CIS ha
s launched its CIS Colloquia featuring invited notable speakers.\nMore inf
