DESCRIPTION:Mehmet Mercangöz\nAt ABB Corporate Research "Control and Opti
mization" is the name of one of the ten global research programs. Scientis
ts in five ABB research centers around the globe - including the research
center in Switzerland- take part in projects in this program. The R&D proj
ects involve the use of a wide variety of methods ranging from condition m
onitoring and fault detection to model predictive control and real time op
timization and they cover an even wider variety of applications ranging fr
om control of variable speed electric drives to scheduling of overhead cra
ne operations. In this talk an overview of the R&D activities in Control a
nd Optimization at the research center in Switzerland will be presented ba
sed on recent scientific publications and patent applications. The topics
will include advanced control of mineral processing\, oil and gas producti
on \, and power generation applications\, as well as the application of mo
del predictive control to fast transient systems. A common backdrop is the
advances in computational as well as algorithmic capabilities in the fiel
d of optimization and their impact on driving applications with larger pro
blem sizes or faster sampling rates.\n\nBio:\nMehmet Mercangöz is current
ly the group leader for Control and Optimization at ABB Corporate Research
Switzerland. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Boğaziçi Un
 iversity\, İstanbul\, Turkey\, in 2000 and 2002\, respectively and obtain
ed his Ph.D. at the University of California\, Santa Barbara in 2007 all
in Chemical Engineering. His Ph.D. thesis was in the area of distributed m
odel predictive control.  He has joined ABB Corporate Research Switzerlan
d right after his graduation in 2007 and since then worked as a scientist
and principal scientist at the same research group. His current research a
t ABB is focussed on the modeling\, control\, and optimization of thermody
namic systems such as gas compressors\, solar thermal power plants\, or el
 ectro-thermal energy storage units.
