DESCRIPTION:The Swiss Polar Institute (SPI) was created to provide service
s to and promote synergies within the polar community in Switzerland.\n\nW
ith the Exploratory Grants\, SPI supports Swiss based scientists active in
polar regions (including remote high-altitude regions such as the Andes a
nd the Himalayas) by allowing them to launch short-term new ideas (for exa
mple pilot projects)\, fund additional field work or launch new collaborat
ions with financial support for logistics. Collaboration with new teams or
across disciplines are particularly encouraged\, as well as participation
  in larger/international activities.\n\nIn 2021\, SPI has dedicated a tota
l budget of CHF 150’000.- to fund technology development relevant for po
lar science\, the Arctic and Antarctic\, according to the SPI’s high lat
itude focus. The grants can be used to complement the funding of initiativ
es supported by larger funding schemes (e.g. SNSF\, EU\, etc.).\n\nThe SPI
Exploratory Grants are complementary to the existing Polar Access Fund (s
pecifically focused on early-career scientists) and SPI Technogrants (focu
sed on technology developments).\n\nWho can apply:\n \n\n	Established res
earchers or post-docs (at least 3 years after PhD graduation) based at a S

 ngineering\, materials\, medicine\, humanities and social sciences\, etc.)
\, are encouraged to apply if they have a project to be conducted in a pol
ar context.\n\n\nFunding: maximum CHF 40’000.-. The grants can be used t
o complement the funding of initiatives supported by larger funding scheme
 s (e.g. SNSF\, EU\, etc.).\n\nEligible costs:\n\n\n	travel costs to scient
ific stations/infrastructure in polar regions (including for the performan
