 iscussion and questions\n\nThis event is the first of a serie of public c
 onferences organized by ART FUNDAMENTS. It relates the course’s first c
 hapter which investigates the subject of matter and material through art
  history and artistic practices In order to encourage students to develop
  a critical understanding of what matter is and a personal approach to h
 ow to experience it\, this public conference proposes to put into perspec
 tive two different approaches — of an artist and an architect. Both wi
 ll present their working process\, how they conceive the thinking regardi
 ng the making in their approach\, and how they work (with) material. In 
 that sense\, we will discuss the conception of the material that their pr
 actices reveal. Through the cross-presentation and dialogue\, we investig
 ate the relation of art and architecture\, searching for divergences and 
 common grounds.     \n\nProf.Martin Fröhlich is managing director o
 f AFF Architekten\, Berlin\, and teaches together with Prof.Anja Fröhli
 ch at the Laboratory of Elementary Architecture and Studies of Types (E
 AST) at EPFL. They are specialists of the relationship between design int
 ent\, material use and architectural elements. Martin and Anja Fröhlich 
 teach the architecture students to think in terms of reuse\, in order to 
 develop sustainable design methods that take into account current ecolog
 ical issues. Their work as architects is based on an understanding of ar
 chitecture as an object. The pleasure of observation and realisation\, as
  well as the freshness of interpretation\, are an essential part of their
  work. The design process is guided by the respective idea developed fro
 m the observation and analysis of different qualities and the current typ
 ologies or forms are constantly questioned and compared with contemporary
  requirements.\n\nEsther Kläs was born in 1981 in Mainz\, Germany. She 
 graduated from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (2007) and received an MFA f
 rom Hunter College (2010)\, New York. She currently lives and works in B
 arcelona\, Spain. Her work is exhibited  in international exhibitions\, 
 including Italy\, Beligium\, Perù\, United-States\, Austria and Germany.
  Over the last ten years\, Esther Kläs has developed a distinctive visua
 l language that harks back to the great sculptural traditions of the 20t
 h century – including postwar abstraction and Minimalism – while simu
 ltaneously challenging contemporary sculptural norms. Her totemic sculpt
 ures\, many of which are built on a human scale from\, are intended for d
 irect interaction and engagement. Using malleable materials that can be 
 worked by hand\, including cement\, clay\, plaster\, Styrofoam and resin\
 , Kläs is a sculptor who maintains an intimate physical relationship wi
