 21 in the IJURR Studies in Urban and Social Change series: Housing in the 
 Margins. Negotiating Urban Formalities in Berlin's Allotment Gardens. Base
 d on ethnographic research\, Hanna Hilbrandt focuses on the residents of a
 llotment gardens (a law prohibits housing there) on the outskirts of Berli
 n\, but also on the local bureaucracy. Drawing on postcolonial theories\, 
 the anthropology of the state\, and critical legal geography\, her book dr
 aws attention to the power of negotiation in the governance of urban space
