DESCRIPTION:Prof. Andrew Lawrence\, University of Edinburgh\, UK http://ww
 w.chem.ed.ac.uk/staff/academic-staff/professor-andrew-l-lawrence\nAbstract
: This presentation will be an account of our research into how molecular
complexity is rapidly and selectively generated in biosynthetic pathways.
We are focused on developing step-economical total syntheses that facilita
te the production of practical quantities of our target molecules. This ap
proach towards total synthesis enables greater collaborative research on t
he properties of these natural products whilst forcing us to tackle import
ant reactivity and selectivity issues without resorting to the excessive u
se of non-strategic manipulations. By following a biomimetic approach we h
ave developed several bio-inspired domino reaction sequences that rapidly
and selectively generate molecular complexity (i.e.\, new bonds\, rings an
d stereogenic elements). We are simultaneously\, therefore\, able to impro
ve synthetic organic chemistry whilst probing fundamental questions regard
ing the chemistry of biosynthetic pathways.\n
