DESCRIPTION:Federica Paglialunga ( LEMR \, EPFL)\nAbstract When an earthq
uake nucleates in the earth crust\, the potential energy accumulated durin
g the inter-seismic period is released into breakdown work\, heat energy a
nd radiated energy. Often the breakdown work is considered a seismological
equivalent of the fracture energy. However\, discrepancies related to the
definition of the two are not yet fully solved. To this end\, we reproduc
e frictional ruptures in the laboratory\, as analog for earthquakes\, to i
nvestigate the relationship between these two energies.\n\nBio PhD studen
t in the Laboratory of Experimental Rock Mechanics\, currently working on
laboratory earthquakes energy budget. She is interested in experimental te
chniques to study different stages of rupture dynamics and frictional cont
 act.
