DESCRIPTION:Prof. Gonçalo Bernardes University of Cambridge\, UK\nGonça
lo Bernardes\, Professor of Chemical Biology at the University of Cambridg
e (UK)\, focuses on the use of chemistry principles to tackle challenging
biological problems for understanding and fight cancer. He will give the n
ext NCCR online talk entitled “Translational chemical biology” on Nove
 mber 29\, 2021.\n \nAbout the talk\nGonçalo Bernardes’ research uses c
hemistry principles to address questions of importance in life sciences an
d molecular medicine. His lecture will cover recent examples of emerging a
reas in his group in:\n\n	Methods developed for site-selective chemical mo
dification of proteins at cysteine\, disulfide\, lysine and serine and the
ir use to build stable and functional protein conjugates for in vivo appli
cations\;\n	Bioorthogonal cleavage reactions for targeted drug activation
in cells\;\n	Click-degraders\, small molecules that can be covalently atta
ched to RNA species through click-chemistry and can degrade them\, that ar
e akin to ribonucleases. Using click-degraders we developed meCLICK-Seq\,
a powerful method for the study of diverse aspects of cellular RNA methyla
tion.\n\n \nAbout the speaker\nDr. Bernardes is Professor of Chemical Bio
logy at the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry\, University of Cambridge
. He is also a Group Leader at iMM Lisbon. His research group interests fo
cus on the use of chemistry principles to tackle challenging biological pr
oblems for understanding and fight cancer. Gonçalo is the recipient of tw
 o European Research Council grants\; a starting grant and a proof-of-conce
pt grant\, and was awarded the Harrison–Meldola Memorial Prize in 2016 a
nd the MedChemComm Emerging Investigator Lectureship in 2018\, both from t
he Royal Society of Chemistry\, and the 2020 International Chemical Biolog
y Society Award 2020. After completing his D.Phil. in 2008 at the Universi
ty of Oxford\, U.K. under the guidance of Prof. Ben Davis\, Gonçalo under
took postdoctoral work at the Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfa
ces\, Germany with Prof. Peter Seeberger\, and the ETH Zürich\, Switzerla
nd with Prof. Dario Neri\, and worked as a Group Leader at Alfama Lda in P
ortugal. He is also a co-founder of Targ.Tex\, a company that is developin
g a highly-targeted therapy for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme.\
