DESCRIPTION:Béla Kapossy\, Florence Graezer Bideau\, Peter Bille Larse
 n\, Michael Herzfeld\, Sarah Kenderdine\, Harriet Deacon\, Luca Zan\,
  Chiara Bortolotto\, Trevor Marchand\, Ave Paulus\, Katriina Siivonen\
, Alain Dufaux\, David Littlefield and Michel Rautenberg\nThis interna
tional workshop aims to spearhead and consolidate thinking around the nexu
s of heritage\, creativity and innovation. It builds on recent trends as w
ell as enthusiasm around a virtual panel organized at the bi-annual Critic
al Heritage Studies Congress in August\, 2020 at the University College Lo
ndon. In response\, this academic event seeks to pave the way for a substa
ntive interdisciplinary dialogue including social\, humanities and technic
al sciences and further reflection.\n\n\nMichael Herzfeld\, Harvard Univer
sity\, Keynote Crafting the Artisan: Creativity as Material Performance an
d Social Challenge\n\nDescriptions of heritage\, guidance and norms rarely
denote the central role that innovation and creativity play in conservati
on. Emphasis in narrative terms tends to focus on connections to the past\
, rehearsing long-standing dichotomies between authentic heritage and chan
ge. Many times\, creativity and the ensuing transformations of both rural
and urban spaces tend to remain hidden behind exposed artefacts and offici
al representations\, silenced by authorized heritage discourse or simply r
elegated as vernacular practices. Ranging from massive infrastructure cons
truction\, speculative architecture and total material transformations of
heritage sites to micro-level restoration and beautification techniques by
local craftsmen\, innovation clearly takes different forms\, values and p
ositionalities in the context of heritage. Such phenomena prompt the need
for further theoretical reflection. Furthermore\, EPFL as hub for heritage
\, technology and innovation offers an atypical yet productive environment
to deepen this conversation.\n\nIn summary\, this academic event seeks to
shed light on the diversity of innovation and creativity found in the her
itage field at different levels\, implemented by multiple actors and their
significance for practices. Presentations include both empirical case-stu
dies and theoretical perspectives\, which will form part of a special issu
 e of a peer-reviewed open-access journal dedicated to this topic.\n-------
