The geometry of jet and arc spaces has long been studied in the context of birational geometry and motivic integration. In the first half we will recall some of the classical results as well as presenting some more recent developments on the schematic structure of the arc space. A key ingredient in these is de Fernex and Docampo's formula on the sheaf of differentials of jet and arc spaces. In the second half we will introduce a more categorical approach to their construction and discuss how to prove a similar formula for Greenberg schemes and arithmetic jet spaces. This talk covers work in progress with Tommaso de Fernex and Roi Docampo.
