Despite appearances, and perhaps contrary to intuition, water flowing in rivers, atmospheric currents, and blood flowing through the arteries of our body share many common features, making them part of the same broader class known as wall-bounded flows. In this talk, I will present my journey through different types of wall-bounded flows as they occur in both natural and engineered systems.
I will show how secondary currents in open-channel flow affect hydraulic resistance and modify the flow structure. I will also discuss how water flows are dominated by large turbulent structures, known as very-large-scale motions. Finally, I will present the most recent results of my research on blood flow, focusing on the effects of stents (mesh-like devices made of different materials and inserted into stenotic arteries) on the flow structure.
