Time As Material
Today, architecture is still considered an essentially static discipline. The obsession of architects is often focused on securing performance for the immutability of a building. But to be preserved in its “original state” and counteract the influence of time and the environment, a building needs a lot of care. The garden around the building, on the other hand, grows, adapts. Gardening is considered an act of care and skill in which time plays the leading role. Humidity, sunlight, bacteria, fungi, and fauna are kept in a healthy balance and contribute to the development of a garden or park that consequently benefits from and contributes to a larger ecosystem. Can architecture foster development and change over time? Can we think architecture beyond an idealized collective memory depicted without its context, like a landmark in a snow globe and find geographical and geological clues that inform us about ecosystems, histories, and possible futures? Can we conceive of architecture as a place of interaction between stories, spaces, and people? Is this diversity not the condition of contemporary architecture and architectural production?
Short bio:
Truwant + Rodet + is a Basel-based architecture office founded in 2015 by Charlotte Truwant and Dries Rodet. The cultural background of the two partners has been shaped by various experiences abroad such as studying in Switzerland and Belgium, working in Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Brussels, and a residency in Japan. Their goal is therefore to remain as curious and receptive as possible and to open their field of investigation beyond architecture to landscape urbanism, exhibition making, installations, furniture design, research, and teaching. Truwant + Rodet + develops projects without cynicism or nostalgia, using all available technologies and specialists while relying on the logics of the territory and the landscape.
In 2017, they received the Swiss Art Award for their project "A Pavilion". In 2020, Truwant + Rodet + won the renovation for the Centre “Culturel Suisse” in Paris with the Parisian firm ASBR. In 2022, they won the competition for the renovation and transformation of the Stadium of Bulle. In parallel, from 2020 to 2022, Dries Rodet has been teaching the studio "Proposals for Uncertain Conditions" at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Versailles in Paris. And from September 2023, they will teach together as visiting professors at EPF Lausanne.
