Frontiers of Visual Computing

Visual computing is an emerging field that aims to develop theoretical foundations and computational models to capture, transform, and synthesize visual information including images, videos, geometric shapes, and other types of unstructured data. The field has seen tremendous theoretical and algorithmic breakthroughs over the last decade that will fundamentally change the nature of our interaction with such datasets in the future.

In an era of “Big Data” characterized by exponential growth of visual information, the core challenge of visual computing is to build tools that enable semantic high-level access to vast visual datasets. Apart from purely algorithmic considerations, this also includes designing intuitive user interfaces and visualization techniques that enable practitioners to capture, manipulate, and reproduce the visual complexities of the world.

At the 2017 I&C Research Day, world-leading experts in the area of Visual Computing will discuss their groundbreaking work towards achieving these goals. EPFL researchers will showcase ongoing research projects and engage with the audience in a series of interactive demonstrators.
