Each building is intended to remain at a given location between three to fifteen years, until it is either relocated or stored for future reassembly. pool Architektur responded by designing a prefabricated timber construction system that enables a variety of spatial configurations and appearances, allowing for careful integration into the surrounding environment. Other projects such as the room-within-a-room installation for “El Gato Muerto” or the temporary hotel “Momentum” have evolved as a result of pool’s building for disassembly.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Thomas Friberg + Sophie Piticco, pool Architektur</strong><br>\r\npool Architektur evolved from a discussion platform for debates on architecture and urban planning and began its practical work as a collective in 1998. The office and its form are understood as a work in progress with regard to an ever-changing profession. The office has won numerous competitions and is primarily active in urban planning at different scales as well as residential, infrastructure and public building construction. Over the past decades, ideas and solutions have changed, as have names and faces, because diversity and change are at the heart of pool Architektur’s identity. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nThomas Friberg studied architecture at ETH Zurich. After graduating, he worked at ETH Studio Basel, David Chipperfield Architects, joining pool in 2008. In 2018 he was admitted as a new partner. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nSophie Piticco studied architecture at EPF Lausanne and ETH Zurich. After internships in Munich and Helsinki, she joined pool Architektur after graduating in 2017. Since 2023 she is an associate at the firm.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Part of School Lecture Series, Autumn 2026, Learning Vol.1</strong><br>\r\nWe are told that learning is no longer confined to the school or the university, but it has become a continuous process that involves the totality of life. Yet in accepting this reality, we take for granted several questions that loom large within the contemporary idea of learning. In a time when technology and information are ubiquitous, does it still make sense that for learning to happen or be confined within a place? Is learning still an asymmetrical relationship where there are teachers and a student? And above all, is learning accessible, or has it become too expensive a commodity? In this lecture series, we’ll attempt to answer these questions by investigating learning on different levels such as technology, construction systems, educational spaces, and above all, making architecture. Indeed, the question that is more than anything else crucial to us is whether architecture is still a place of learning and not only of empowering those who have capital to build it. We will look at schools, drawings, robots, and measuring devices. In the first part of my talk, I will introduce a method we have developed that allows us to resolve the spatial distribution of stresses in sheared soft-materials, known as Boundary Stress Microscopy. We have applied this technique to suspensions undergoing shear thickening. I will present our results on the existence of clearly defined dynamically localized regions of substantially increased stress that appear intermittently at stresses well above the applied stress. Surprisingly, we find that these spatially distinct and dynamic phases quantitatively account for the observed shear thickening seen in sheared colloidal dispersions (e.g. Oobleck). In the second part of my talk I will discuss our results on the rheology of active matter. Our system is composed of microtubules and kinesin motor proteins that self-assemble to form complexes that propel themselves through the fluid. What results is a dramatic alteration in the measured viscosity. I will provide a simple physical model that fits the rheological response with zero fitting parameters. <br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Biography: </strong>Daniel Blair is a Professor of physics and a co-founding member of the Institute for Soft Matter Synthesis and Metrology I(SM)2 at Georgetown University. Prior to joining Georgetown in 2007, Professor Blair was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University in the Paulson School of Engineering and the Department of Physics. In 2009, he was awarded the NSF Career Award and has done pioneering work into the structure and rheology of soft and biological materials. His group has developed a variety of tools and techniques centered on quantitative 4D microscopy coupled with microfluidic and rheometric methods. Held every week, alternating between <strong>Tuesdays and Thursdays</strong>, these sessions provide an opportunity for laboratories, platforms, centers, and units to receive guidance and support on implementing more sustainable laboratory practices.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThe <strong>Sustainable Labs initiative</strong> is part of EPFL's <em>Climate & Sustainability Strategy 2030</em>, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of <strong>40% compared to 2006/2019 levels</strong> and achieve <strong>climate neutrality by 2040</strong>.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n→<a href=\"https://www.epfl.ch/about/sustainability/sustainability/green-labs_draft_ag/\"> </a><strong><a href=\"https://www.epfl.ch/about/sustainability/sustainability/green-labs_draft_ag/\">Learn more about the EPFL Sustainable Labs initiative</a>.</strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\nResearch activities are a key lever for achieving these ambitious goals. However, while cutting-edge research drives innovation, it also carries a significant environmental footprint. Laboratories consume large amounts of energy, generate substantial quantities of plastic, chemical, and biological waste, and contribute considerably to greenhouse gas emissions. At EPFL, we are committed to understanding and reducing this impact. Through the development and deployment of the <strong>EPFL CO₂ Calculator</strong>, we help researchers measure, understand, and improve the environmental performance of their activities.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nFrom <strong>October 8 to December 17, 2026</strong>, the <strong>Sustainable Labs: Get Involved</strong> sessions will focus on training and supporting users in the use of the <strong>EPFL CO₂ Calculator</strong>.
