"description": "
To orchestrate complex behaviors in mammals, the cerebral cortex must continuously transmit its processing results to subcortical regions. While internal cortical processing relies on highly selective sparse codes, these descending cortical output streams employ an enigmatic dense code, characterized by high firing rates and low feature selectivity. This dense population code presents a profound paradox: how can downstream regions extract precise, cognitively relevant signals when most cortical output neurons can be active at any moment? We address this paradox by testing the hypothesis that cortex does not lose information when switching to a dense code. Instead, it utilizes a mechanism for sparse-to-dense coding transformations discovered by my laboratory: thalamocortical synapses target specifically the dendritic initiation zone for calcium action potentials (APs), which enables cortical output neurons to transmit multiple information streams simultaneously via a multiplexed 1-2-3 AP syntax. I will provide first evidence that this remarkable synaptic specificity and coding syntax generalize across long-range pathways. Information coupling via an anatomically and biophysically distinct dendritic nexus may hence be a ubiquitous mechanism for sparse-to-dense coding transformations in cortex. Dissecting these mechanistic origins of cortical output streams is only now possible due to a unique in vivo – in silico approach, perfected over two decades, that my laboratory developed for bridging the gaps between dendritic and population-level computations
",

            "description": "
Weekly BioEngineering Talks (Lunch Provided)
\r\n
\r\nINVITED SPEAKER:
\r\n
\r\nBuilding Time: Switching Circadian Clock Complexes through Clustered Hyperphosphorylation of Intrinsically Disordered Regions
\r\nProf. Michael Brunner, Heidelberg University Biochemistry Center (BZH)
\r\nHost: Prof. Felix Naef
\r\n
\r\nAbstract:
\r\nCircadian clocks generate ~24 h rhythms through delayed negative feedback, yet how progressive phosphorylation of clock proteins is translated into temporally ordered molecular events remains incompletely understood. In the mammalian clock, PERIOD (PER) proteins form complexes with CRYPTOCHROME (CRY) and casein kinase 1δ (CK1δ) and undergo extensive phosphorylation within intrinsically disordered regions over the circadian cycle.
\r\nWe identify a molecular principle by which progressive phosphorylation can generate distinct and persistent regulatory states. Whereas individual phosphosites are rapidly dephosphorylated, multisite phosphoclusters within disordered regions of PER2 become resistant to phosphatases and display switch-like, all-or-none phosphorylation. Distinct phosphoclusters, including the FASP region, the β-TrCP phosphodegron, and a C-terminal phosphocluster, exhibit markedly different dephosphorylation kinetics.
\r\nTogether, these findings suggest that progressive phosphorylation of intrinsically disordered PER2 is decoded by phosphoclusters that function as molecular switches with distinct kinetic properties. Their sequential accumulation may generate a series of metastable functional states, thereby translating progressive phosphorylation into circadian control of subunit remodeling, subcellular localization, and turnover of repressor complexes.
\r\n
\r\nBio:
\r\nMichael Brunner is Professor of Biochemistry at Heidelberg University and a leading researcher in the molecular mechanisms of circadian clocks. He received his PhD from Heidelberg University in 1989, followed by postdoctoral research with James E. Rothman at Princeton University and the Sloan Kettering Institute, and with Walter Neupert at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. During this time, he made important contributions to mitochondrial biology, particularly to elucidating the molecular machinery responsible for mitochondrial protein import. He joined the Heidelberg University Biochemistry Center (BZH) as a professor in 2000 and has served several terms in its academic leadership, including as Director of the BZH. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of FEBS Letters.
\r\n
\r\nBrunner’s research has contributed to one of the most complete molecular descriptions of biological timekeeping in any organism. Using the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa, his laboratory has elucidated central features of the circadian feedback loop, including the functions of the White Collar Complex and FREQUENCY, and the roles of casein kinase 1, progressive phosphorylation, and dynamic complex remodelling in determining circadian period and timing. In parallel, his group has extended this work to human cells, investigating the coordination of the circadian clock with the cell cycle and cellular proliferation. Notably, this research has revealed mechanisms through which oncogenic pathways such as MYC can suppress the molecular clock and promote proliferation, thereby linking circadian regulation to malignant growth. His broader work examines how circadian systems respond to environmental and metabolic signals and how clock function may influence cancer biology and treatment.
\r\n
\r\nSTUDENT SPEAKER:
\r\n
\r\nFluidFM: A new tool for Lipid Droplet research
\r\nGeoffray Marie-Devillard, Deplancke Lab
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n------------------------------------------------------------------------------
\r\n
\r\nBioEngineering Talks mandatory EDBB Seminar Attendance (1st-Year PhD Students)\r\n

\r\n\t
Attendance sheet to print HERE
\r\n
\r\nThe BioEngineering Student Seminar Series is an official course for which students can register and earn credits.
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\t
Register HERE
\r\n\t
Attendance sheet to print HERE
\r\n
\r\nGeneral information:
\r\nIn-person attendance is preferred to support your fellow students. "description": "
Maximum likelihood prediction plays a major (hidden) role in modern large language models via the next token prediction task. In this talk, we propose and study a simplified version, based on an i.i.d. data model. The model is based on a quantum maximum likelihood predictor, which is obtained by embedding empirical distributions into quantum states and minimizing quantum relative entropy over a prescribed model class.
\r\nWe interpret this predictor via quantum reverse information projection and a quantum Pythagorean theorem, under structural assumptions such as unitary invariance and closure under pinching. We extend this theorem to non-self-adjoint mixture families in finite dimensions and establish a related infinite-dimensional inequality under additional regularity conditions. Finally, we present non-asymptotic guarantees, including convergence rates and concentration inequalities in trace norm and quantum relative entropy.
\r\nJoint work with Sreejith Sreekumar.
\r\n
\r\nBio : Nir Weinberger is an Associate Professor at the The Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Technion - Israel Institute ofTechnology. "description": "

\r\nSix questions. Real jurors. Come find out if >>venture>> is the right competition for your startup.
\r\n
\r\nApplications for the 2027 >>venture>> competition open October 1, and there's exactly one thing standing between you and the Top 200: six questions the jury will ask about your startup.
\r\n
\r\nThe Starting Line is where you find out how you'd answer them, before it counts. And \"starting line\" means exactly that — whether you've got a team, a prototype, and early traction, or just an idea you've been turning over in your head, this event is built for you.
\r\nCome learn how the competition works, how CHF 590,000 in non-dilutive funding gets distributed, and how you could walk away with up to CHF 150,000, mentoring, and a consulting package from McKinsey & Company. If it feels like the right fit, you can start your application that same evening; our team and expert mentors will be there to help you get going.
\r\n
\r\nWhat happens on the night
\r\n
\r\nOur jurors score alumni startups live, out loud, on the same six criteria that decide the 2027 competition: Innovation, Team, Technology & Product, Market, Sustainability & Impact, and Business. You'll watch real answers get real feedback: the good, the underprepared, and everything in between.
\r\nThen it's your turn:\r\n

\r\n\t
Writing room: sit down and draft your own answer to the most challenging of the six criteria, with structure and prompts to work from
\r\n\t
Clinics: small-group sessions with mentors who'll push back on your answers before you have to defend them for real
\r\n\t
Apéro: meet other founders, the >>venture>> team, and the people who'll be reading your application
\r\n
\r\nWho should come
\r\n
\r\nAny founder, co-founder, or nonprofit lead thinking about applying to the 2027 competition. Early idea, side project, or a startup already shipping- all welcome. You don't need a finished business plan. You need to be innovative.
\r\n
\r\nAbout >>venture>>
\r\nWe're celebrating 30 years of backing Switzerland's boldest founders. Since 1997, >>venture>> has run Switzerland's leading startup competition — a non-profit foundation co-organized by ETH Zurich, McKinsey & Company, Knecht Holding, Innosuisse, and EPFL. Since then, the concept has grown substantially richer through theoretical traditions developed across Europe and beyond.
\r\nThis year's seminar revisits horizontality not as a closed paradigm, but as a mode of critical engagement with the socio-political, ecological, and economic processes of urbanization. It is approached as a historical, ideological, conceptual, and political question — one intersecting with territorial redistribution, accessibility, solidarity, and spatial justice amid deep socio-ecological transformation. Neither purely top-down nor bottom-up, horizontality invites reflection on spatial organization, territorial governance, and the conflicts shaping contemporary urbanization.
\r\nRather than repeating critiques of vertical power and growth-oriented urbanization, the seminar aims to pluralize perspectives on horizontality as an open concept — one capable of generating new rationalities and spatial imaginaries for future design and socio-political agendas.
",
